Boys State Programs (The Secret Sauce)
There are many different opportunities at Oregon Boys State, and many different paths you can follow to success. All students who attend Oregon Boys State will learn much about leadership, governance, and civics, but they will all learn about it differently. For example, one student may choose to learn by running for office as Governor or a Legislator. Another will learn that same information from the perspective of a journalist, joining the media, interviewing candidates and writing news articles, blog posts, or contributing to the daily news broadcast. Yet another may choose the law enforcement angle, and take in those same lessons from the point of view of someone who is enforcing the laws. This unique methodology ensures all students are engaged and learning in the own, best way.
Numrous program options exist. Some require advance planning. Here are some (but probably not all) of those options:
Registration and Testing/Auditioning Procedure
After arrival, find your room, drop of your stuff, get into uniform, and proceed as follows:
Tests and Auditions: 8:15-11:45
Meet-and Greet 9AM-11:45PM
If you aren't doing one of those things, head to Rogers Rehearsal Hall in the Rogers Music Center for a meet-and-greet and to start building the alliances and relationships that will be crucial to your success.
First Formation: 11:45AM at Flagpole
Opening Ceremony 12PM in Hudson Hall of Rogers Music Center.
Why do we say "Some not all?" Due to the dynamic nature of the simulation-based learning environment provided at Oregon Boys State, there are some aspects of the program that will not exist yet until a student decides to do that. For example, in 2016 a student opened a business by buying all of a certain kind of candy and then re-selling it for Boys State currency, which hey then used to leaverage for other purposes. This wasn't something staff designed or thought of; but it worked as it obeyed the simulation rules and worked within the interactive context of the simulation.
*Note: Items marked in RED above require preparation and/or that you pass some sort of screening instrument prior to acceptance into that part of the program. Those screenings occur during and immediately after registration. Upon arrival at Boys State, tell the staff what you want to try out for or do, and we will direct you to the correct area.
